"I was a happy camper yesterday in Hollywood to see a box from Frondelli USA Drums of New York hit my loading dock. I opened the well-padded snare and started my inspection. No dings, no cracks, no fingerprints, no problems with JR's shipping or final inspection. Great job!
Looks and sound: This 5x14, 8-lug ProClassic 5 snare drum is finished in 60's Black Oyster Pearl. The lugs are a rounded type of a bowtie. The lever on the strainer is about 3/4" below the top hoop making it impossible to damage doing rimshots. The drum has 16 strands of Dynamicx wires on the bottom. Evans heads came standard on the drum. The snares can be removed using only a key so no screwdriver is needed. Strainer is very silky working and built solid. Snare butt is cast and seems to be solid as well.
After finger tapping I put the snare on a snare stand and starting doing a little brush work. Then came the sticks. WOW!!! This thing sounds really good! Another drummer at work came in and said: "That thing sounds good!".
After getting the drum home it was time to put it on a kit and try some Remo heads. I keep lots of new heads to try out on drums. The first was an Emperor "X". This made the drum a little more dark. I was pretty happy with that head. Next was a powerstroke 3 with center dot. This head did not work at all!! Choked the drum really bad. I opened more Remo boxes and pulled out the Diplomat, Ambassador and Emperor. I started with the Diplomat. THAT'S IT!!!! Over and done with! I pulled out my '66 Ludwig Black Oyster Jazzfest to do a side-by-side test. The Frondelli USA drum is a new snare drum that SOUNDS like a vintage snare drum. JR's claim of "vintage right out of the box" is true. I loved the tone so much with the Diplomat I put all the other heads back in the closet and played and had fun.
This drum is easy to tune, it looks cool, it is very well made, and the edges look great. Now, who is going to be next to order a snare or kit from JR? Try his stuff out, you might just like it!"
